LETTER FROM OUR CEO: “THE SIGNIFICANCE OF BLACK PHILANTHROPY MONTH”

In 2025, we find ourselves at a critical juncture in our nation’s history. The disproportionate impacts of economic disparities and social injustice on Black communities underscore the vital need for resources to support Black-led nonprofits.

Black Philanthropy Month is a global initiative designed to inform, inspire and invest in Black nonprofit organizations, such as Operation Restoration, and increase overall giving within the Black community. On Thursday, August 28, Operation Restoration will join #Give828 – the only giving day dedicated to raising money for Black-led and Black-benefiting nonprofits – and we need your support.

Give 8/28 was created as a bold vision to spotlight grassroots Black nonprofits and has grown into a powerful movement that has raised over $1 million for hundreds of Black community-led organizations doing critical, life-changing work across the country. A recent study showed that, of the nearly $70 billion given annually by foundations in the United States, less than one percent reaches women and girls of color.

August 28 holds huge significance in Black history – Jackie Robinson met with Brooklyn Dodgers president to discuss plans to integrate Major League Baseball on August 28, 1945; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historic “I Have a Dream” speech August 28, 1963; and then-Senator Barack Obama became the first Black man to ever win and accept the Democratic nomination for president August 28, 2008.

This August 28, we can make history once again to ensure this year is the most successful fundraising campaign yet for those of us doing the work daily to remove barriers and restore lives within our community. Here’s what you can do:

  • Visit Operation Restoration’s Give 8/28 profile and make a donation TODAY

  • Spread the word to family and friends and encourage them to match your donation

  • Support as many other Black-led nonprofits as you can this Black Philanthropy Month

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our mission. Your support matters now more than ever and makes a huge difference in the lives of women and girls impacted by incarceration.

In Solidarity,

Syrita Steib
